Are you ready for HIGH SCHOOL?  There are lots of things to learn before classes start, but don't worry, after a three-day orientation, you'll be ready to go.

Day One: you'll find out about the Loughlin tradition, the school rules, and figure out how to get 7 classes in a 7-day schedule that rotates in a 5-day week. You also get a locker and a special Loughlin lock. Have fun learning how it works. You'll also find out what House you're in.

Day Two: Time for a little fun and compettion. Your house will compete in the Loughlin Spirit Day games. There is a three-legged race, relay races, jump rope, and the famous tug of war. That should build up a good appetite for the picnic lunch of burgers and dogs.

Day Three: It's your first day schedule on a fast track. You'll spend 15 minutes in each class and then move on to the next one. You'll scramble to find your classrooms. You'll also meet your wonderful teachers and find out what the class is about. You'll also hear each teacher's classroom rules.

See you on September 8, 9, and 10.

SPOTLIGHT: Loughlin's Labs Go Hi Tech
Posted 03/31/2010 03:34PM

Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School has purchased close to $100,000 of hi-tech hardware, scientific tools, and software to bring its science labs up to the state of the art for high schools. The laboratory tools and software were purchased from Vernier Technology and Software using a part of Art and Pat Ryan’s generous grant for technology.

The Vernier system is about hands-on science. The students still do actual experiments. The Vernier tools facilitate gathering and analyzing data. Students use probes – specialized sensors – to gather real-time data during the experiment. The probes plug into LabQuest  – a hand-held device that is somewhere between a super-calculator and a mini-computer. LabQuest provides readouts and graphs that students use to analyze the data. The Vernier equipment can be used in the class room, the labs, and in the field.

All of Loughlin’s labs – biology, chemistry, and physics – now have the Vernier technology. Using these new tools not only increases the students’ interest and motivation, it really helps students understand the results of the experiment.  In the photo below, students in the physics lab are using a differential voltage probe and LabQuest in an experiment about  Ohm's Law.
