About Saint Katherine Drexel:
St. Katherine Drexel was born on November 26, 1858, to Francis and Hannah Jane Drexel. When Katherine was 15-years-old, she traveled to Rome with her family and was invited to an audience with Pope Pius IX, an awe-inspiring experience for her.
At her father’s passing Katherine inherited a large fortune which she used to establish and build schools for the less fortunate, especially Native Americans and freed African slaves. She also founded Xavier University in New Orleans in 1915. Throughout her life, she devoted herself to helping others with her main focus being to provide education to all. Despite attempts by organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan to stop her progress, she remained determined to her cause. She fought for social justice and hated the thought of discrimination.
Katharine Drexel died on March 3, 1955, at the age of 97 from pneumonia. On November 20, 1988, Pope John Paul II beatified Katharine Drexel after her first documented miracle. Katharine Drexel was canonized as St. Katharine Drexel on October 1, 2000.
