About Blessed Raphael Rafiringa:

Raphael Rafiringa was born in Madagascar in 1856. He was the first Malagasy to enter the congregation of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. When missionaries were expelled from the island, he, as the only native religious, was appointed leader of the Catholic Church of the island. Raphael was focused on the education of lay people in Madagascar, particularly the youth.  Specifically he helped form and educate lay catechists to pass on the faith in areas where priests and brothers did not have the numbers to reach He died on May 19, 1919 and was declared Blessed in 2009.
