Thanksgiving 2005
|
| *Story by Senior Karina R. |
This
year's Thanksgiving Assembly created awareness for Loughlinites,
educating them both on hunger in the community and the entire world.
They saw positive results that occurred when the school came
together for a canned food drive, and they were educated on many
surprising statistics of poverty around the globe. Together with
photos from students' experiences in Kenya, the Thanksgiving
Assembly provided an extra appreciation for all the blessings that
may be taken for granted.
Loughlinites rose to the occasion in the canned food drive
donating a total exceeding 900 items of food. The food was then hand
delivered to the very thankful food pantry of Queen of All Saints.
One of their representatives even called the donation "overwhelming"
as she looked over at the neatly displayed cans and boxed items.
Because of the success of the drive, several families were blessed
with food on Thanksgiving. |
The assembly then turned into an in depth look at the poverty
experienced by the third world. A spokesman from
Bread for the World spoke of the many people who are forced to
spend under one dollar a day to survive. He also showed us the tiny
margin the United States government donates to feeding the third
world in a year, as opposed to the large sum it gives to military
support in one day. His final message was one of hope. He encouraged
us, our generation, to increase awareness because we "have the power
to stop hunger in our lifetime."Finally, we saw a slide show with
touching photos from the students' trip to Kenya. Though we have
seen pictures of Kenya before, these were more personal because they
were taken by our own peers. The show created an even stronger
connection between Loughlin and its sister school St. Mary's. The
Thanksgiving assembly was a heartwarming experience that increased
students awareness and gave them a greater sense of appreciation for
their everyday blessings.
