On November 29th, 2006,
thirty Biology 2 students conducted an
experiment in advanced genetics at the
renowned Dolan DNA Learning Center (part of
the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory System).
Using sophisticated laboratory equipment,
the students extracted their own DNA and
isolated a strand of “junk DNA” from
Chromosome 16. Their DNA was amplified
through the process of Polymerase Chain
Reaction and analyzed through Gel
Electrophoresis.
Ultimately, it was discovered that
approximately one-third of the class shared
a common ancestor (dating back approximately
10,000 years), as evidenced by the presence
of the “Alu” gene insertion on their
Chromosome 16. Overall, the trip was a
unique experience to learn not only about
the techniques of genetic testing but also
the ties that bind us all. The class’s gel
