On Wednesday, May 9, 2007 the men and women of Loughlin went to the auditorium to mark the beginning of LaSalle Week, a week long celebration of the founder of Lasallian schools, St. John Baptiste deLa Salle.  Brother Dennis welcomed the students and explained the significance of being a Lasallian school.  Brother spoke of the Lasallian network, a network of schools that includes our twin school in Africa, St. Mary’s Kenya and a university in Bethlehem, Israel where a former principal of Bishop Loughlin, Brother Daniel Casey, F.S.C. and a graduate, Brother Peter Ierlano, F.S.C. minister to the Christians in Palestine.

After his introduction to the theme of the assembly, Brother Dennis welcomed four graduates who came back to share their talents with the students and the staff.  Kathleen Taylor ‘81 was the first female member of the Performing Arts group.  Kathy is a master of American Sign and uses her talent to sign theatrical presentations.  Josephine Santos ‘93, a recipient of the Angelo Consoli Award, has a magnificent voice and is presently a teacher and a community activist in the Brooklyn College Area.  Everett Wilson ‘94 is music director and a teacher of Music at Holy Family, R.C. Church in Canarsie and Kareem Gibbs ‘96 who is a member of the group and a musical stylist and lyricist.  All of the graduates had been active in the life of Bishop Loughlin when they were students.

Kareen, accompanied by Everett, opened with a the prayerful song, “In the Presence of the Lord.”  Kathleen spoke briefly about her experiences while she was at Loughlin and how students at Loughlin must view their role.  Her message was really “To whom much is given.  Much is expected.”  Josephine was next and she spoke about how each student sitting in the auditorium today could make a difference and how lucky the students were to have the adults in this building in their lives and the difference the faculty made in her life.  Josephine then sang “The Wind Beneath My Wings” while Kathy signed the song.  Kareem then dazzled the audience with his version of “You Can Fly” which Kathy also signed.   The show finished with the Chorus, Faculty, Band and student body singing Honeur Et Toi, the song of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and our school song, “Loughlin, Fight For Victory.”

Loughlin can be proud of these four young people who speak to the diversity of our graduates and the wonderful contributions Lasallians are making to their communities.  Come back soon Kathy, Josephine, Everett and Kareem.  Loughlin will always be your home.
